Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
