Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these medications must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
